A Brief History

Saint Lucia’s history is full of intrigue and colonial battles. Originally inhabited by the Arawak and Carib peoples, the island was later fought over by France and Britain an astonishing 14 times, earning it the nickname “The Helen of the West Indies.”

  • 1502 – Possibly sighted by Christopher Columbus.

  • 1660 – The French signed a treaty with the indigenous Carib people.

  • 1814 – Britain took full control of Saint Lucia after years of battling with the French.

  • 1979 – Saint Lucia gained independence from Britain on February 22 and remains part of the Commonwealth.
